Woven Words

Woven Words gives you five, six or seven letters arranged in a circle and a crossword grid to fill. The letters never change: what changes with every word is the order you connect them in. The level ends when the grid is full, but the extra words count too.

How to play

At the bottom there is a circle of letters. You drag your finger across them in sequence to build a word: if the word belongs to the grid, it slots into place above; if it is a valid word that is not in the grid, it counts as a bonus.

Every level starts from a seed word of five, six or seven letters and derives all the shorter words those same letters can make. The grid holds twelve or more of them, crossing like a crossword, and the level closes when every square is full.

The words in the grid are picked from the common ones: if a word means nothing to you, it is almost certainly not the one being asked for. There is one hint per level, revealing a letter of your choosing. The level you reach is saved and, with a Google account, follows you to your other device.

How to find the words

Start with the short ones. Three-letter words number in the dozens and turn up almost by accident, but they do more than score: every word placed reveals letters in the grid, and those letters suggest the long words crossing them.

Look at the grid, not the circle. This is the tip that unlocks the most levels. When you are stuck, stop reshuffling the letters at the bottom and look at the empty squares above: the length of the missing word and the letters already crossing it cut the possibilities down to a handful.

Try the families. If a word works, try its variants: singular and plural, the verb forms, the -ER and -ING endings. With the same letters, CAT and CATS are both possible, and often both are there.

Vowels give you the shape. With the circle’s letters in mind, ask where the vowels can sit in the word you are hunting: English rarely stacks four consonants in a row, and that alone rules out most combinations.

Use the seed word. Every level is built from a word that uses all the letters: finding it is the shot that often completes half the grid, because it is the longest and it crosses everything else.

The bonus words

Valid words the letters can make but that are not in the grid are not wasted: they are counted separately. They do not finish the level, they finish it well — and they are how the game rewards anyone who knows words other players never try.

Frequently asked questions

Can a word use the same letter twice?

Only if that letter appears twice in the circle. The letters available are exactly the ones shown, no more and no fewer.

Which vocabulary does it use?

Common English words, ordered by frequency: the grid draws from the best-known ones, while rarer ones count as bonuses. The game is available in the app’s other languages too, each with its own vocabulary.

Do the levels run out?

No, they are generated one after another. The progress saved is the number of levels you have completed.

What if I cannot find anything else?

The hint reveals a letter in the grid, and that is usually enough to restart your reasoning. The level cannot be lost: there is no way to get it wrong, only to stop.
